DC-3 Airplane Weathervane

Monday, May 7th, 2012

We couldn’t resist this bit of aviation trivia. An Airplane Weather Vane is vying for the title of world’s largest weather vane in the Guinness Book of World Records. A retired Douglas DC-3 sits atop a swiveling support at the Yukon Transportation Museum which is right next to the Whitehorse International Airport. Amazingly, even as large as it is, the DC-3 windvane only requires a 5 knot wind to rotate. Worth a flyby if you’re in the area.
At Tailwinds, we don’t have weather vanes that are this large but we do offer a fine selection of Airplane Weather Vanes. Tailwinds has a variety of airplane weather vanes that are suited for installation on top of an aircraft hangar, cupola, gazebo, or roof. The smaller airplane windvanes also make a good focal point in a garden setting or mounted on a deck railing. We offer only top quality weather vanes that are handcrafted from the finest copper or heavy duty 14-guage steel. Don’t forget to look for our selection of Made In the U.S.A. weather vanes.

General Aviation Pilots Who Volunteer

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

There are many worthy organizations where pilots can donate their skill set to help make a difference in the world. One of those organizations is LightHawk. Volunteer pilots in North America donate their skills, plane and fuel to conservation partners. As pilots we know that seeing the land from the air provides a unique perspective of this magnificent country and its resources. If interested in learning more contact LightHawk.org. FYI, the image shown is from Point Reyes National Seashore in Northern California which is about an hour north of the Tailwinds office via land transportation.

Aviation Humor

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012
  • Here is the real function of an airplane propeller.
The propeller is just a big fan in front of the plane used to keep the pilot cool. When it stops, you can actually watch the pilot start sweating.

Being Green in Aviation

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

Today is Earth Day and Tailwinds is proud to be a “green” company.  While it is now popular to claim being green, Tailwinds has been actively green since the first recycled paper came on the market.  All the paper we use in the office has recycled content.   We also ardently practice the 3Rs of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.   For instance, we have two waste receptacles in every office.  One is used for recyclables and the other for non-recyclables.  We have been able to reduce our trash by about 90%.

We intentionally seek products that are made from recycled materials or use sustainably grown materials.  We market several hundred products crafted from wood.  We are pleased that most of the wood models and decorative propellers we sell are all produced from sustainably grown forests.  Our Pilot Balance Sculptures and Pilot Wine Caddy (my favorite) are crafted from recycled metals.

After all, we are pilots and we want to keep those blue skies blue.  Wishing you Blue Skies & Tailwinds!™

B-29 Superfortress Flies Again

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Fifi is flying again!  The world’s only flying B-29 Superfortress is now air borne thanks to the efforts of the Commemorative Air Force.  With years of hard work and making custom built engines the B-29 Fifi will be making its rounds at air shows this summer.    Check out the air show schedule at the Commemorative Air Force web site.   Wishing you Blue Skies & Tailwinds!™

Super Bowl & Flying

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Heard this story from a fellow pilot in the DFW (Dallas Fort Worth) area.  Apparently Green Bay sent a $380,000 snow plow to the closest “small airport” to the Super Bowl venue.  Due to the unusally poor weather they wanted to make sure that the runway was kept clear so their fans could fly to the game.
