Mercury Capsule Model

As a young man I was fortunate to grow up in St. Louis, the headquarters of McDonnell which designed and built the mercury space capsules. These cone-shaped one-man capsules were only 6 feet, 10 inches long with a lower diameter of 6 feet 2 inches. The blunt end was covered with an ablative heat shield to protect against the 3000 degree heat of reentry. An escape tower was fastened to the capsule (not featured in this product). All of the astronauts were my heroes. But these first few, the Mercury 7: Slayton, Shepard, Carpenter, Grissom, Shirra, Glenn, & Cooper were the real pioneers of American spaceflight and they all flew the Mercury. John Glenn was the last living member of the Mercury 7 when he died in 2016. This authentic, extraordinary replica of the original spacecraft has been faithfully reproduced.
